My conclusion is that some DVI monitors just don't work with Lion. So I went back to the Apple store to pick up a mini display port to DVI converter. I tried another monitor with the HDMI to DVI converter and the video came through just fine. I brought the new mini home, plugged it in, and I had no video just like the first one. While installing the software updates at the Genius Bar, that mini kenel panicked. I called Apple Care, they made an appointment with me at the Genius Bar, I took the new mini in and, using the same display adapter, it worked fine with their monitor. I plugged the old Mac mini (circa 2007 but updated to Snow Leopard) in and the video worked just fine. There was no video from the HDMI to DVI converter. A few days ago I tried to set up a new Mac mini for my wife.
I'm telling my family to wait for the M-series iMacs before they purchase anything because my MBA is already faster than almost everything any of them have.Same problem here with a Specter x20G Naga III monitor. My old iMac will be going to a grandkid for schooling.
When Apple releases the first M-series iMac I bet the insides will look very similar to what Luke built.Īs for keeping my late 2015 27" iMac, I bought an M1 MBA and since I'm retired I'll probably buy a simple external display for home use and use the MBA for travel. The amazing thing is it actually worked, with several caveats. The computer had to be inside the iMac, not outside, which he ended up doing with a bunch of tape and a few screws to hold it together. As for everyone saying to use target disk mode, Luke started it that way but the idea was to show what the new iMac could be not simply using an old iMac as a monitor. My only concern with this video, which is not normal for Luke, is it came out as an infomercial for iFixit. Add the speakers back in and maybe a low volume fan and the new iMacs will be amazing. What Luke showed is that Apple will have no problem reducing the thickness of the iMac while providing top of the line performance. Current iMacs are packed with way too much junk (from Intel). As for being useless, you need to look further into what he exposed about Intel-based Macs.
